Putting the "Fun" in "Fundraiser"

Tonight we're having our fundraiser for the Aids/lifecycle 4. I'm sharing the event with Pedro, who is hosting. I'm providing the bar, extra food and some graphic support.
The response to the EVITE has been surprisingly weak. It's almost as if people aren't taking me seriously, or worse, trying to send a message of Non-suport. 5 (out of 33) confirmed they're coming, but about 20 people viewed the Evite, and did not respond. I find this troublesome.
In the past I've always expected a low turnout for party guests and have been pleasantly surprised (see April 2004 entry) so I will not get my hopes down.

in reality, I'm going to put out the best party I know how, and shower love and gifts on all those that chose to attend. I can hopefully make up what I don't raise tonight in N.Y., Dominica, Buffalo and Puerto Rico.

Oh, did I mention I'm travelling through all of May . . . ?

Turn of the Century

Got a call from Pedro that he wanted to do 100 miles before his fundraiser on Saturday. Asked if I was available on Thursday to crank something out.

We got together with another rider, Alyson, at 7 a.m. and headed to Duarte to catch the riverside bike trail to Seal Beach.
I hauled bikes in my truck, and Pedro followed with Alyson in her car.
The actual ride is only about 83 miles, with some extra loops added on near the end, but it felt like a full century to both Pedro and Alyson. We launched at 9 and returned at 4 p.m., with a 40 minute lunch. Not bad, and I barely lost them the entire day. They stayed right with me all the way to the end. I was impressed. I'm sure they'll do quite well on the Lifecycle ride in June.

Chalk up another 80-some miles for me as well. It sure felt god to get back out there after all the bathroom remodel work. I have been a prisoner of tile since April 1.

Going for the Turkish-bath look . . .
Tiling is not a quick process, it takes a long time. I've found I have a choice; I can do it quickly and hate the crooked tiles when I'm done, for the next 5 years, or I can go slow, do it right, and be happy about my work every time I step into the bathroom.
Which choice do you think I went for?

This is something I think would make Wally proud . ..

Now we're getting somewhere's!

The contractor came back, returned the key to the house I gave him for the workers, and repaired our busted curb. I am so happy :)

He also said he would write up a letter, with Daniel, stating what the contractors found under the bathroom when they repaired the foundation, to help us out in our quest for justice.
If you need any work done on your house, call MICHAEL KYLE of cornerstone construction, they are the best!- 323.573-5075

back in the saddle . .
So here is where we left off: I was writing in this blog on or around March 26th, eaglery awaiting the day my buddy would come and help me get my bathroom repaired. i.e., new floor boards, new tile and perhaps replace the toidy.
I stepped away form the blog for a moment and I haven't been back since, it's been about 2 weeks.

We removed the old vanity to find a hole in the floor bigger than a bread box, and the disaster started growing. As we quicky began the "demo" process, the walls and floor simply meelted to the touch. There was so much moisture and decay in these walls that the wall studs felt like sponges, and the leaking pipes that caused the problem were still leaking INSIDE THE WALLS.
It was a disaster of mold. mildew and horrid smells that came wafting up to gag us. Good thing there was plenty of beer on hand to help us manage our disgust.

Wally and I worked for 7 days straight before I put him back on a plane for Mass. and the potty room isn't done yet. I am currently sekeing advice on the best way to hold the previous owners feet to the fire, and get him to cough up some money for these repairs. There is a little law in California called "disclosure" which means if there are any defects in the house that might affect it's resale value, the owner needs to tell the buyer, or DISCLOSE the information upon the sale. Mr. Coleman never mentioned a missing floor, or extensive water damage due to long term neglect. He also never mentioned the floor joists under the tub were sawed off, leaving the bathtub unsupported. It's pretty clear he was aware due to the newspapers I found in the wall dating back to January of 1989. More to come on this issue
